---|---|---|---|---|
(one of the three barrels was new): Bright, pale straw-yellow. Rich, nuanced aromas of yellow peach, apricot, white pepper, iodine, clove and smoky oak. Wonderfully rich, deep and sweet, displaying strong extract and a powerful, chewy, rising finish. Finishes peppery, broad, saline and rich, with a tannic impression and excellent length. This wine is vinified at Baron Thénard, the source of these grapes, with barrels provided by Sauzet, then moved back to Sauzet's cellar in mid-winter. This slightly peppery, saline Montrachet does not have the distinction of the Chevalier-Montrachet but boasts terrific power and solidity. This is quite overtly reduced and thus the nose is unreadable today. Otherwise there is even more size, weight and power to the almost massive flavors that possess excellent mid-palate sap as well as a very firm core of ripe acidity that prevents the finish from being unduly heavy or ponderous on the hugely long finish. As good as the preceding grands crus are, and they are indeed excellent, this simply brings another dimension of depth to bear. Don't miss! The 2014 Montrachet Grand Cru has an aristocratic bouquet, serious, like the older brother of the Bâtard-Montrachet, hints of almond and white tea, dried lemon peel emerging with time. The palate is fresh and vibrant with crisp acidity, wonderful harmony, hints of walnut and white pepper interlacing the intense finish. It's not quite as flattering as the Chevalier at the moment, but the persistence is more sustained. It is a serious Montrachet that deserves time in the cellar.
