The 2003 Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru is a totally different wine. It clearly carries the signatures of a torrid summer. The flavors are unabashedly ripe and tropical. Soft and curvy, the 2003 also has quite a bit more flesh than Coche fans are used to in young-ish Charlemagne. But you know what? The 2003 remains remarkably fresh and full of life. Those opulent signatures will accompany the 2003 for the rest of its life, and yet its balance is impeccable. Score: 94 Antonio Galloni, Vinous.com Maturity: 2020-2030 01 December 2020 |

Knockout nose combines lime, pineapple, apple and wet stone; much more perfumed than the Perrieres. Then plush and very ripe but not at all roasted, with strong stony character and harmonious acidity giving verve to the wine's expressive fruit flavors. I would not be surprised to see this wine close down in the bottle. Finishes broad and tactile, with terrific persistence. A star of the vintage. Lemon, vanilla, nuts and wet stone on the nose, with a whiff of reduction. Then wonderfully sweet and dense, with superconcentrated flavors of apple, stone and spicy oak. Opens out impressively on the back end, showing a dusty, tactile quality and outstanding persistence rare for the vintage. Offers superb balance for the year; at once superrich and not at all heavy. There were few problems here in 2003, noted Coche, who said that the yield of around 40 hectoliters per hectare was pretty close to normal. There was no frost here, and a bit more rain during the summer helped the vines resist the heat, he explained. Score: 92 - 96 Stephen Tanzer, Vinous.com 01 September 2004 |
