Tasting Notes

Coming from the coolest vintage on record at the time (before 2011), the 2010 Syrah Reva Alban Estate Vineyard still hit 15.2% natural alcohol, of which it doesn't show a trace. Possessing the telltale Iodine and seaweed character this cuvee always shows, it has lots of darker fruits, smoked herbs, black olive and a touch of floral aromas and flavors. Full-bodied, concentrated, firm and structured, it's a serious, age-worthy wine from John that should be forgotten for 4-5 years. I had a great visit with John Alban, whose estate is located at the southern end of the Edna Valley and in one of the coolest AVAs in California. Despite this, he makes some of the most concentrated, rich and age-worthy reds and whites from the entire state.

One of three single vineyard Syrahs from the cooler 2010 vintage, the 2010 Syrah Reva is the largest production cuvee of the three and comes from a number of estate plots, most containing volcanic soils. Smoke, graphite, iodine and chocolate all show in this full-bodied, concentrated, yet fresh and lively Syrah. It will benefit from short-term cellaring and 15 years of longevity.

Another wine I expect to flesh out once in bottle, the 2010 Syrah Reva has classic peat moss, earth, black fruits and smoke to go with a medium to full-bodied, lively feel on the palate. I love the overall precision here and this is more in line with the 2008 than the richer, bigger-boned 2009. Give it a handful of years once released and plan on drinking through 2026.
