Argentina's Best - Gran Enemigo

Gran Enemigo

There is no doubting the incredible value for money offered by Gran Enemigo from Argentina's Uco Valley .  These are superb single-vineyard reds (Cabernet Franc with Malbec) made by Alejandro Vigil, the talented winemaker of Catena, and Adrianna Catena.

These are terroir wines - from vines planted high in the Andes, where the cool breezy climate, limestone volcanic soils and sharp contrast in day/night temperatures give aromatic wines with elegance, lift and structure.

As always, the flagship Gran Enemigo Gualtallary Single Vineyard (£275/6 IB) is the wine of the range.  2016 is a great vintage here showing serious Cab Franc complexity -  "transporting me back to the classical wines from the Bordeaux of yesteryear" - Wine Advocate's Luis Gutierrez.  A cooler year, 2016 is the highest scoring (99 pts) vintage since the 2013  (£525/6 IB) the first wine from Argentina to receive the coveted 100 points, and it is also the highest rated Cabernet Franc wine!  Just 400 cases produced. Drinking now-2035.

The Gran Enemigo 2016 is "the finest yet made" - a blend of 50% Malbec, 20% Cabernet Franc, 15% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Merlot and 5% Petit Verdot.  With excellent floral character, savour and minerality, it will drink well for a decade. - 97+ points from the Wine Advocate.  From £180 per 6 IB.

The El Enemigo Chardonnay 2018* is well worth singling out.  This "rockstar Chardonnay" is a creamy rich white with plenty of interest and saltiness that will reward a few years in bottle.  97 points from James Suckling, 93 from Wine Advocate.  An absolute steal at £150 per 12 IB (£212 inc VAT).
