BURGUNDY 2016: Domaine Bachelet-Monnot

Alec and Marc Bachelet are the brothers at the helm of this relatively young Domaine.  Since reorganising the family holdings in Puligny, Chassagne, Santenay and Maranges they have already gained serious attention and respect with their terroir-driven approach in the vineyard and the cellar.  They work sustainably with the added advantage of low-yielding old vines, making naturally concentrated, pure wines that express their terroir.  Their two red Maranges premier crus from a hilly area just south of Chassagne, are also singled out for great praise in 2016.  From 80 year old vines planted on limestone and clay, there is clear 1er cru quality here with expressive red fruit and density; undoubtedly some of the best value red wines in 2016 at just £200 per 12 IB  (91-93 points).  As Neal Martin says, the "quite cerebral" and "top drawer' 1er Crus Maranges are well worth securing this year.

"Many of you will already be aware how much respect I have for Marc and Alec Bachelet who are doing wonderful things... These guys are just making stupendous white Burgundy wines that rank alongside the best you can find... If you have not discovered the Bachelet brothers yet, it's time to do so".
Neal Martin, Wine Advocate

"It was another superb set of wines from the domaine.... My budget would actually be invested in the outstanding Maranges premier crus such as Fussière and Clos de la Boutière that I strongly suspect will represent some of the best values over the entire of the Côte d'Or this vintage, and if I were a millionaire...I would still buy them."
