Charles Heidsieck Brut Reserve NV

Charles Heidsieck Brut Reserve.jpg

Charles Heidsieck was something of a maverick.  In 1851 he became the first Champagne producer to visit New York where Champagne was met with roaring success and he became known as "Champagne Charlie".  In the 20th century the house had several changes of ownership and fell under the radar but following a revamp by a new team, is becoming famous again for its quality. The NV Brut Reserve regularly wins awards and stands out amongst other NV cuvees in blind tastings.

"Rich and creamy, this harmonious Champagne is expressive, with brioche, crystallized honey, black currant and toasted marshmallow flavors, accented by hints of verbena, baked peach and chopped nut. Vibrant and focused through to the lasting, saline-tinged finish. Drink now through 2022." 93pts Alison Napjus, Wine Spectator

One of Charles Heidsieck's unique selling points is the high use of reserves in its flagship Brut Reserve cuvee, which is formed of around 40% reserve wine from up to 200 base wines with an average age of 10 years.  Indeed only Krug Grande Cuvee uses more reserve wines (£1100/12).  It spends five years on its lees, which is considerably longer than most non vintage champagne giving it the trademark richness for which it is renowned, along with deep golden colour, notes of brioche and buttery hazelnuts.

"We want to be judged on the Brut Reserve and always put quality first" Stephen Leroux, Executive Director of Charles Heidsieck

This champagne house takes its Brut Reserve so seriously that is has in fact chosen not to release a 2002 vintage, despite the remarkable quality of this vintage, instead choosing to use the best grapes for its reserve wine library.  We are delighted to offer this wonderful champagne at a keen price. Still undervalued, Charles Heidsieck now tops the list as our favourite NV champagne at Albany.

"I don't think any acclaim this house has received has ever been sufficient.....Every single Champagne in the Charles Heidsieck range is stunning" Tom Stevenson, Winesearcher Dec 2013
