A Chilean Trailblazer

Clos Apalta bottle sq.jpg
Founded in 1994 by Alexandra Marnier Lapostolle, the French family known for producing Grand Marnier, Lapostolle aim is to "create world-class wines using French expertise and the superb terroir of Chile."
Neal Martin, December 2012

Casa Lapostolle's Clos Apalta made an immediate impact from their debut vintage when Robert Parker described their 1997 as an "extraordinary wine...Serious wine tasters should give it a try"

  • The distinctive blend of Carmenere, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon is sourced from the estate's oldest vines, many of which are pre-phylloxera and are un-grafted.

Lapostolle has its eye firmly on quality.  With Michel Rolland as consultant, Clos Apalta is made using the latest techniques in precision wine-making straight out of Bordeaux:  fermenting in smaller lots, hand de-stemming berries and similar to Cos d'Estournel, a state-of-the-art, 6 level gravity-flow winery. "Always one of the top wines of Chile", Clos Apalta has a great following in the US and is the only South American wine ever to be Wine Spectator's #1 Wine.

"Clos Apalta 2012 displays attractive aromas of milk-chocolate covered cherries, then juicy dark fruits in the mouth wrapped in a creamy texture from good quality oak. Lush with a spicy warm finish. 15%. 2012 was marked by earlier than normal ripening whilst cool nights helped preserve the fresh natural acidity. "
Albany Vintners

"Dark and deep inky purple red colour.  Complex nose opening towards ripe and expressive red and black fruit, such as plums, red cherries, dry figs and blueberries.  Spices such as clover and black pepper.  With a concentrated structure, this wine has a round attack followed by velvety and polished tannins filling the mid palate and a ripe and rich long lasting finish."
