Marc Colin, St Aubin 2013
“There is a knockout range of wines in 2013 from this address. There is just an honesty, a deceptive simplicity to them because on the surface they are so delicious, yet underneath are some articulate expressions of terroir, stunning mineralité and hidden complexity that tends to become clearer with aeration. I have heaped praise upon Domaine Marc Colin in previous years. This is no different. Domaine Marc Colin is one of the best growers in the Côte de Beaune, perhaps to Saint Aubin what Jean-Marc Roulot is to Meursault. And you can quote me on that.”

We are delighted to offer the wines from Domaine Marc Colin in 2013, a grower whose white Burgundies are hugely admired. The Domaine is now run by his children Caroline, Joseph and Damien, with a definite focus on retaining minerality and precision (natural yeasts, no batonnage, more stainless steel, and less time in oak). An impressive range in 2013, and though not yet reviewed by Allen Meadows, these wines receive wonderful praise from Neal Martin.

“The 2013 Saint Aubin 1er Cru en Montceau, which Damien Colin told me was one of his favorite premier crus this year, has a complex bouquet with hints of lemon curd and dried apricot emerging with aeration. This is in stark contrast to the en Remilly that is stonier and more reserved. The palate is well balanced with lemon zest, orange peel and hints of peach all served up with a side order of spice on the finish. It’s perhaps a little brash compared to the other premier crus, but there is plenty to savor here and the length is impressive. Drink 2016-2027”

“The 2013 Saint Aubin 1er Cru en Remilly has a typical Puligny-like, mineral-driven bouquet: taut and linear with hints of wet limestone developing in the glass. The palate is driven by the acidity here, lending a citric ribbon from start to finish. This is less generous that Colin’s other premier crus from the village, but there is more class here. Outstanding. Drink 2016-2029”
