Situated at the northern end of Saint Estephe, this traditional and historic estate was for years impeccably run by the shrewd, no-nonsense Madame Capbern-Gasqueton. 'The most northerly of all the Classed Growths, this is one of the greatest terroirs of Bordeaux according to Robert Parker but also dependably one of the best values of Bordeaux too, especially so in comparison with the other stars of St Estephe, Cos and Montrose. Their new winemaker Vincent Millet (formerly quality director at Chateau Margaux) made his mark with an excellent 09.

A Saint-Est'phe of stature and vertical intensity, the 2021 Calon S'gur dazzles from the very first taste. Spice, menthol, licorice, black cherry, mint and espresso are some of the many notes that build with a bit of coaxing. The 2021 clocks in at a modest 12.9% in alcohol, yet it possesses tremendous density and textural resonance. What a wine! Tasted two times.
