This Classed Growth is one of the best values in Pauillac, as prices are always reasonable. Bordering Latour, Grand-Puy Lacoste, Lynch Bages and Pichon-Lalande, it was originally one property with neighbouring Haut Batailley (before the two were divided in 1942). In style, Batailley is classically Pauillac and a typical drinker's claret that ages exceptionally well. Full bodied and robust, with rich blackberry fruit, firm tannins, and a sense of restraint that gives both balance and ageing potential. Stricter selection in the grand vin in recent vintages has resulted in greater precision and consistency with a more polished, sophisticated mouthfeel.

The 2021 Batailley shows promise, exhibiting aromas of cassis, plums, licorice, cigar wrapper, loamy soil and dark chocolate, followed by a medium to full-bodied, layered and charming palate built around ripe, powdery tannins. Supple and giving, it will offer a broad drinking window.

An especially strong effort for this estate, the 2022 Batailley exhibits aromas of dark berries, cassis, licorice and sweet soil tones, followed by a medium to full-bodied, rich and layered palate. It's a blend of 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 22% Merlot and the balance Petit Verdot.

The 2021 Batailley is quite the powerhouse. Even so, it offers fine balance. Broad tannins enshroud a core of dark-toned fruit, licorice, spice, black olive, lavender and sage. Batailley is a rare 2021 that is going to need time to come together. Its intensity, breadth and overall persistence are impressive. There's real textural resonance here, not to mention tons of character.
