In Bond Fine Wine. 2019 Château Siran, Margaux, Bordeaux, France. Cru bourgeois • Red Bordeaux in 3x150cl. Top critic score: 94/100 (NM). Drinking window: 2024–2060. Sold in bond by Albany Vintners, independent fine wine merchants.

Situated in the heart of Margaux, Château Siran has been in the Miailhe family for over 150 years and was once linked to Château Palmer and Pichon Lalande. Since 2008, sixth-generation owner Edouard Miailhe has overseen a complete renovation, raising quality to new heights while keeping prices remarkably modest. The final blend is often close to that of Palmer with equal parts Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon and a touch of Petit Verdot for spice. The result: perfumed aromatics, supple berry fruit, fine tannins, and the elegance and finesse of top-flight Margaux.

What the critics say

Jeb Dunnuck (JD) — 91–93/100 · JebDunnuck.com, 30/06/2020

The 2019 Chateau Siran is another classy 2019 with loads to love. Lots of spiced currants, cedarwood, dried herbs, and chocolate give way to a medium to full-bodied, moderately tannic, mid-weight, yet beautifully balanced Margaux that will benefit from 3-4 years of bottle age.

Jane Anson (JA) — 94/100 · Inside Bordeaux, 2024-01-31 · Drink 2026-2040

A knockout example of the wine, one to track down and grab hold of. This showcases the fresh lift of Siran, the depth of expression, but it is also so finessed and elegant, inching forward in power through the palate, layered with chocolate, cocoa bean, liqourice root, bilberry, cassis, black pepper spice. Special label, in black and gold, marks the 160th vintage of Siran under the Miaihle family…

Tight and concentrated fruits, this is knitted down right now, more muscled than many in the appellation and will need a good few years to soften. Clear dark spice, the Petit Verdot is pulling its weight and making its presence felt not just in the fruit quality but the sappy nature of the tannins, springly tightly shut on the finish.
