In Bond Fine Wine. 2016 Château Lynch Bages, Pauillac, Bordeaux, France. Fifth Growth • Red Bordeaux in 12x75cl. Top critic score: 99/100 (JA). Drinking window: 2026–2075. Sold in bond by Albany Vintners, independent fine wine merchants.

Chateau Lynch Bages has roots stretching back to the 16th century and was transformed in the 18th century under the influential Lynch family. Much of its modern reputation is owed to the charismatic Jean-Michel Cazes, whose dynamic leadership from the 1970s onwards helped propel Lynch-Bages onto the world stage, combining traditional Pauillac character with a more polished, approachable style that won a global following. Lynch Bages combines the classic structure of Pauillac with a warmth and generosity that have made it a favourite of collectors and restaurants across the globe. Planted on superb deep gravel soils south of Pauillac, the wines combine impressive concentration with elegance and longevity. Lynch Bages continues to evolve while remaining one of Bordeaux’s most dependable and widely loved classed growths.

What the critics say

Lisa Perrotti-Brown MW (LPB) — 97/100 · Wine Advocate, RobertParker.com, 30/11/2018 · Drink 2022-2058

Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2016 Lynch Bages comes charging out of the gate with pronounced cassis, chocolate-covered cherries, mulberries and menthol notions, backed up by scents of garrigue, tilled soil and a waft of tapenade. Medium to full-bodied, rich and fantastically concentrated, the generous fruit is superbly framed by firm, ripe, grainy tannins with tons of pepper, cinnamon and clov…

Neal Martin (NM) — 97–99/100 · Wine Advocate, RobertParker.com, 28/04/2017 · Drink 2026-2060

The 2016 Lynch Bages is a blend of 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 19% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc, 2% Petit Verdot with 13.7% alcohol and an IPT of 95, the highest ever for this property and probably one of the highest on the Left Bank this vintage. It was picked between from 27-30 September for the young vines, then the picking team stopped, restarting on 3 October with the Merlot and the Cabernets finis…

James Suckling (JS) — 98–99/100 · JamesSuckling.com, 24/03/2017

This is really back-ended thanks to a powerful and almost endless finish. Full-bodied, dense and powerful with incredible concentration and length. Round and polished tannins. Layered. This unravels bit by bit. Energetic acidity gives it such superb freshness. This is at the 2010/2009 level.
