Lots of mineral, currant and berries on the nose. Full-bodied, with chewy tannins and a long finish. A bit austere, but there's enough stuffing to back it up. Best after 2010.

Latour's second wine, the 2004 Les Forts de Latour, is a blend of 74% Cabernet Sauvignon and 26% Merlot that represents 41% of the production. Medium to full-bodied with good density, it is the finest second wine I tasted. It exhibits a dark ruby/purple color, plenty of black currant and cherry fruit, and fine length. It should drink well for 15+ years.

Quite a star, this wine! Perhaps the surprise of the lot. Very dark crimson and looks a lot younger than the 2005. Very winning and glossy. Dense and savoury unlike 2005's ripeness and sweetness. Youthful and zesty. Beautiful balance. If pushed you could serve this now with a steak.
