the 2013 Clos Vougeot Grand Cru from Jean-Michel Guillon has a not dissimilar nose to that of Grivot: detailed and quite mineral-driven with precise wild strawberry and cranberry scents, and a touch of cola in the background that becomes more conspicuous as it opens. The palate is well balanced with crisp but firm tannin. This is a composed, harmonious Clos Vougeot with good matière and a pleasing saline character towards the sustained finish. This is not a grower that I know well, but this excellent wine suggests I should investigate further. Score: 92 Neal Martin, Wine Advocate, RobertParker.com Maturity: 2017-2032 01 November 2015 |

Comparing the prices with my scores, I would identify the best-value 2013 Clos de Vougeot as that of Jean-Michel Guillon, a Gevrey-based producer whose domaine has grown from 2.5 ha in 1980 to 13 ha today, including a tiny slice of lower-lying Clos de Vougeot, about whose 2013 the Guide Hachette, for which it is a coup de coeur, suggests, 'it's to be served from 2017 to 2026 with calves' sweetbreads and morels'. Tasted blind. Mid cherry red. The nose rather reminds me of Campari. Good ripe fruit weight on the front palate. Quite evolved and nervy but refined and impressive. Persistent. Score: 17 - 18 Jancis Robinson MW, JancisRobinson.com Maturity: 2022-2034 01 November 2015 |

This is also very ripe with plenty of wood influence on the menthol, oak spice, cassis and intensely earth-scented nose. This is a powerful example of the appellation with excellent mid-palate concentration to the well-detailed and highly energetic broad-shouldered flavors that deliver outstanding persistence on the muscular finale. This really does a slow build from the mid-palate and note that here too plenty of patience will be required as this is clearly built for the long-term.
