Tasting Notes

A wine to drink up over the coming couple of years, the 2002 Cote Rotie Chateau d’Ampuis offers notions of white pepper, mint, underbrush and mature Syrah fruit to go with a medium-bodied, supple and juicy feel on the palate. While there’s not much backend depth or richness here, it has a classic Cote Rotie feel, and is certainly a joy to drink; nevertheless, it’s on the downslope and needs consuming.

Score: 88

Excellent ripeness for the vintage, with focused red and black cherry and plum fruit. Also shows judicious toast, along with mineral and coffee notes on the supple finish. Drink now through 2010.

Score: 90

James Molesworth, Wine Spectator 31 May 2006

A hint of new oak on the nose. Lots of acidity and a bit severe still – though not as severe as the 2001. Still a bit youthful though. Wood smoky perfume. Very good constitution. Excellent for a 2002. Still a bit drying on the finish.

The component parts of the 2002 Cote Rotie Chateau d’Ampuis merited scores ranging from 85 to 88, so even here there is a degree of austerity, leanness, and lack of flavor ripeness and maturity that could not be overcome even by a master winemaker and producer such as Marcel Guigal. It will be moderately weighty and herbal, with a good bouquet, but little flavor and texture. Drink it during its first 5-6 years of life.
