Tasting Notes

Possessing additional richness, the 2009 Cote Rotie Brune et Blonde boasts rocking cassis, scorched earth and chocolate to go with more classic cured meats, mineral and violet-like nuances that emerge with time in the glass. Full-bodied, gorgeously pure, with a core of sweet fruit, it too will totally thrill over the coming decade or more.

The 2009 Cote Rotie Brune et Blonde was harvested early in 2009. Comprised of 96% Syrah and 4% Viognier, aged 36 months in equal parts new and 1-year-old barrels, it offers gorgeously complex aromas of sour cherries, blackberry, underbrush, violets, olive and steak tartare to go with a seamless, fresh and lively palate feel. Already approachable and a downright sexy example of the appellation, it should drink nicely for 12-15 years.

On the other hand, the 2009 Cote Rotie Brune et Blonde is brilliant. It was scheduled to be bottled several days after my visit in late October. A deep plum/ruby/purple color is accompanied by notes of toast, bacon fat, raspberries and black cherries intermixed with hints of roasted coffee and new saddle leather. Rich, medium to full-bodied, fleshy and silky-textured, it is already hard to resist, and should continue to drink well for 10-15 years.

The 2009 Cote Rotie Brune et Blonde should turn out to be just as good as the 2007 (and possibly better) . This unctuously textured wine exhibits sweet black raspberry and black cherry fruit notes intermixed with notions of coffee, new saddle leather, roasted meat and herbs. Richly fruity, spicy and already attractive, it should evolve nicely for 12-15 years.

Guigal produces more Cote Rotie Brune et Blonde than any other producer of the appellation. The Brune et Blonde often spends up to three years in small oak casks and is always a blend of purchases from approximately four dozen small growers with his estate fruit. There are about 45,000 cases of this cuvee, which generally contains 8-10% co-fermented Viognier. A superb wine, the 2009 is the finest Brune et Blonde produced since the 2003. Possessing abundant black raspberry, black cherry and exotic floral notes as well as hints of honeysuckle, licorice and bacon fat, it should drink nicely for 10-15 years.

Opaque ruby. Smoky raspberry, cherry and violet aromas are lifted and sharpened by a suave Indian spice note. Sappy and broad in the mouth, offering sweet red and dark berry flavors and a touch of fruitcake. Warm yet lively, finishing with excellent thrust, supple tannins and persistent spiciness. Philippe Guigal noted that he won't be surprised if this wine never really shuts down.
