Tasting Notes

The 2005 Pichon Baron is in a gorgeous spot right now. Aromatically expressive and open, the 2005 is so expressive. Cedar, sweet pipe tobacco, mint, dried flowers, mocha and sweet red cherry fruit all meld together in a creamy, wonderfully expressive Pauillac. A long, persistent finish with terrific saline energy rounds things out in style. The 2005 is a super classic Pichon Baron that delivers so much pleasure.

The 2005 Pichon-Baron is showing impressively after 13 years. It boasts intense black cherry, raspberry coulis, graphite and mineral scents that gain intensity in the glass. There is nuance and detail here, perhaps more than any previous release of this Second Growth. The masculine palate is medium-bodied with fine-grained tannin and an insistent grip in the mouth, indicative of its long-term intentions. The mineralité surfaces in a second half that demonstrates great tension and energy. There is considerably more length than previous vintages, and superior precision. An outstanding 2005 that deserves several more years in bottle. Tasted at the Pichon-Baron vertical at the château.

The Château Pichon-Baron 2005 has a not dissimilar bouquet to the Pichon-Lalande with bright red and black fruit infused with cedar and violets, almost Margaux-like in character. The palate is medium-bodied with firm tannin: more masculine than Pichon-Lalande, you could almost say more rustic. Yet there is immense length and persistence here, real depth and vigour on the muscular finish. Yet I might just prefer the property over the road in this vintage.

A deep blue/purple color is followed by classic, sweet aromas of blueberries, creme de cassis, graphite, incense, spring flowers, and toasty vanillin from new oak. With full body and beautiful ripeness, purity, and depth, this atypically precocious 2005 will benefit from 6-8 years of bottle age, and last for 25-30 years. It is dramatically superior to its across the road neighbor, Pichon Lalande.

Deep healthy crimson. Mellow, mild, very sophisticated nose. Still extremely reticent and very dry and gentleman’s club-like savoury with what tastes like an exceptionally heavy charge of tannins. Oddly this is almost in the traditional Latour style just as Latour has moved on from it to add extra fruit to that slightly austere framework. A very long term proposition surely. I think my mark stands for how it tastes now, although it may well develop in the very long term into something much more alluring.
