Tasting Notes
The 2009 Petrus has a delineated and focused bouquet with subtle fireside hearth/ash-like scents infusing the sensual red fruit, hints of Earl Grey emerging with time in the glass. The palate is very well balanced with fine tannin, demonstrating a little more backbone than the 2009 Le Pin. Just a tad more grip, possibly due to some Cabernet Franc lends another dimension towards the persistent finish. You could possibly broach this now with decanting but it needs another year or two. Tasted at Chateau Petrus. A bright purple colour. The nose is warm and inviting, very concentrated with raspberry, wild strawberry and more glycerine than I have encountered in previous vintages. The palate is full-bodied and very supple in texture, beautifully balanced and very sensuous, more a Petrus of texture than tautness or delineation, building on the palate, very good weight with a touch of citrus peel and a sprinkle of white pepper towards the finish. An opulent Petrus very much in the stylistic family of the 1990, this 100% Merlot has a dense plum/purple color and a sweet nose of mulberries, black cherries, some subtle toast and licorice as well as a floral element. A wine of great intensity, a multidimensional mouthfeel and full-bodied, stunning concentration, the 2009 Petrus is everything one would expect of it. Given the sweetness of its tannin, much like the 1990, I suspect this wine will always be “open for business,” appealing even in its youth. Anticipated maturity: 2016-2050+. This is one of the larger productions of Petrus over recent years, with nearly 3,000 cases of this vintage turned out by proprietor Jean Moueix. Harvested between September 17 and the beginning of October, the 2009 Petrus reminds me of what the 1982 tasted like at a similar age. Sweet tannins along with extraordinarily pure mulberry and black cherry fruit intermixed with hints of licorice and truffle are found in this 2009 in addition to a voluptuous mouthfeel, an unctuous texture, and, for Petrus, relatively high alcohol of 14.2%. Stuffed, rich, and creamy-textured with a full-bodied, powerful, exuberant personality, it should be approachable in a decade, and last for 40-50 years. (Tasted once.) Amazing aromas of blackberries, dark chocolate and hazelnut. Full body, with super velvety tannins, yet reserved and all in check. Fresh acidity and an orangy, lemon and chanterelle mushroom aftertaste. Then turns to black olives. Minerals and blueberries. Incredible. Still think 2010 is slightly better. Try in 2020. What a nose this has. I close my eyes when I smell this, and I see perfectly ripe Merlot grapes crushed in the vats. Blackberry, mineral, black licorice, coffee bean and chocolate lead to a full body, with round yet firm tannins and beautiful fruit. The luxurious finish offers a cashmere texture and gorgeous fruit. A powerful tannic frame provides the structure, length and classicism of a grand Bordeaux but there's also a modern purity and freshness of fruit. Winemaker Olivier Berrouet harvested slightly later, at the beginning of October, to guarantee maturity. Dense, complex and profound. Drink 2020-2050. Started picking 18/9 Sep but waited for rains. Mostly picked 1 Oct. Atypical phenological cycle. More like hot places. Acid higher than for most hot years. Very dark crimson. Very subtle and exciting on the nose. Really rich and round and vibrant. Very sweet and exciting. So luscious. Great richness, A certain gentleness of texture. Exciting.
