Tasting Notes

An outstanding effort from the dynamic winemaking duo of Stephane Derenoncourt and Nicolas Thienpont, the 2004 Larcis Ducasse (78% Merlot and the rest Cabernet Franc and a touch of Cabernet Sauvignon) possesses complex aromatics of damp forest floor, cedar, cinnamon, kirsch liqueur, black currants, and roasted coffee. Soft, supple tannin, low acidity, and an expansive, fleshy, medium to full-bodied mouthfeel result in a seductive, complex, delicious claret. Only 3,300 cases were produced from this great terroir that has an unbelievable exposition. Drink the 2004 over the next 12-15 years.

The 2004 (a 3,350-case blend of 78% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc, and 2% Cabernet Sauvignon) may turn out to be even better than the 2003. It is a more structured, forward style of wine with an opaque ruby color, tremendous intensity as well as a lovely perfume of fruitcake, incense, Asian spices, black cherries, and cassis. With a broad, expansive attack and mid-palate, beautiful purity, richness, and texture, and a fresh, vibrant, vigorous personality, this beauty should provide immense pleasure during its first 10-15 years of life.

Finally, this renowned terroir on the famed south-facing Cote Pavie is living up to its great potential. The so-called "dream team" of Nicolas Thienpont and Stephane Derenoncourt has again turned out a beautiful wine from a blend of 78% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc, and 2% Cabernet Sauvignon. The aromatic’s nobility and complexity confirm this vineyard’s potential. Aromas of cedar, spice box, black cherries, currants, and licorice jump from the glass of the dense ruby/purple-hued 2004. With supple texture, sweet tannin, medium to full body, and no hard edges, this beauty will drink well for 12-15+ years.
