Tasting Notes

The 2013 Pape Clement Blanc does not quite deliver the precision of the Smith-Haut-Lafitte Blanc 2013 this year, the oak is still quite pronounced and eroding some of the detail. The palate is well balanced with lime and citrus peel on the entry, hints of toffee apple emerging towards the finish that, again, feels a little oaky. I was hoping for more after the commendable 2013 Pape Clement Rouge, though it still might appeal to those who like their white Bordeaux with a hedonistic bent.

Score: 90

The Pape-Clement Blanc is a blend of 44% Sauvignon Blanc, 16% Sauvignon Gris, 37% Semillon and 3% Muscadelle. It has a light, slightly grassy bouquet with a touch of cold stone and dried white flowers. The palate is clean and fresh with orange peel on the entry. Nicely balanced with a fine line of acidity, this is taut and very focused on the finish. A more sedate Pape Clement Blanc compared to recent years, but there is nothing wrong with that.

Dense and structured white with a deep, enticing fruit character but agile and lively on the palate. Layered and refined. Lots of pear, slice-apple, mineral and lemon character. Clearly outstanding.

Pale lemon-yellow, floral dry honeyed nose and finely poised palate, with complexity to come.

Lemon curd, white peach and shortbread flavors are taking shape, along with notes of meringue and sweetened butter. Rather tightly wound today, but very long.

Score: 92 - 95
