Tasting Notes

The NV Brut Premier Cru Les Vignes de Vrigny is very pretty and nicely balanced throughout. Yellow stone fruit, apricot, mint, panna cotta and lightly tropical notes all meld together effortlessly. This is an especially supple, open-knit vintage for the Vignes de Vrigny, Egly-Ouriet's pure Meunier. In this release, the Vignes de Vrigny is mostly 2011 vintage, with reserve wines from 2010 and 2009. This is one of the very few base-2011 Champagnes that is worth an extra effort to find. Disgorged November 2015. Dosage is 2 grams per liter. Over the years, Egly's Champagnes have gained in polish and finesse without sacrificing their trademark power. Egly was among the first producers to emerge in the grower Champagne movement. As such, he is perhaps sometimes overlooked in favor of some of his younger colleagues. Make no mistake about it, though, these wines are at the very top of the pecking order in Champagne today. Antonio Galloni, Dec 2016

The NV Brut Premier Cru Les Vignes de Vrigny emerges from the glass with warm, toasty notes that lead to an expressive core of pears, nuts, spices, licorice and flowers. The Vignes de Vrigny develops lovely amber, burnished tones in the glass that add complexity to the fruit. This mid-weight Champagne should continue to drink beautifully for at least a few years. The Vignes de Vrigny is 100% Pinot Meunier that spent 36 months on its lees prior to being disgorged in July, 2010. Anticipated maturity: 2011-2016. Egly-Ouriet remains one of Champagne’s leading small growers. From top to bottom these wines impress for their inimitable class. A non-interventionalist approach in the vineyards and cellar, old-vine parcels in top vineyards and long lees-aging are some of the qualities that define these sublime Champagnes.

The NV Brut Premier Cru les Vignes de Vrigny is 100% Pinot Meunier from 40- to 50-year-old vines in Vrigny. The youngest release is based on the 2011 vintage and 50% of reserve wines. It is clear and spicy on the nose, where red apples are displayed and a great purity and elegance is indicated. Disgorged in 2015, this is well-structured, tension-filled and finesse-full Meunier with great purity, grip and aging potential. This charming Meunier should gain more complexity over the next months and years.

Egly-Ouriet's NV Brut Premier Cru les Vignes de Vrigny is 100% Pinot Meunier that was disgorged in January 2014, after it spent 42 months on the lees. Golden in color, it offers a clear, fresh and complex bouquet of matured apples, raisins, nougat, red berries and some floral notes. Very delicate on the palate, this is a remarkable, finesse-full, lighthearted Champagne of great elegance. The 12.5% of alcohol is feather-light here, though the finish shows structure as well. This is a lovely Champagne for breakfast, aperitif or for its own merit. Surely one of the finest Pinot Meuniers I have tasted this year.

Bright yellow-gold. Smoky, deeply pitched aromas of poached pear, chamomile, honey and truffle, with spice and mineral notes gaining strength in the glass. Offers an array of ripe orchard fruit and spice flavors lifted by gentle acidity. Rich but lively, finishing with excellent clarity and lingering smokiness.
