Tasting Notes

Nothing too exciting on the nose: light blackcurrant leaf, a touch of wild hedgerow but develops quite nicely in the glass. Medium-bodied, good acidity, light simple and refreshing but a little simple on the finish. A correctly made, enjoyable if not intellectual wine. Tasted October 2007.

Score: 88

Neal Martin, Wine Advocate, RobertParker.com 01 May 2008

Relatively pale and mature-looking. A little grassy on the nose and a bit tired and rustic on the palate. Perfectly sound for current drinking but it will set no-one alight. Very Graves and lightish. Good balance.

Score: 15 - 16

Jancis Robinson MW, JancisRobinson.com Maturity: 2007-2011 06 November 2007

Always one of Bordeaux’s finest second wines, the 2001 Bahans-Haut-Brion exhibits a dark plum/ruby color as well as a sweet nose of cedar, earth, and red and black currants. Medium-bodied, with a supple texture, fine purity, and admirable length, it will drink well for 5-8 years.

Score: 88

Robert Parker, Wine Advocate, RobertParker.com Maturity: 2004-2012 30 June 2004

A fine second wine, the stylish 2001 Bahans Haut-Brion offers abundant quantities of black currant fruit intermixed with spice and subtle earth notes. With medium body, outstanding purity, and a sweet attack, it will drink well for a dozen or so years. Approximately 30% of the crop made it into this cuvee.

Deep red-ruby. Raspberry, smoke, tobacco and roasted nuts on the nose. Sweet, supple and fairly deep, with nicely integrated acids giving shape to the wine. This has very good breadth and palate presence. Lingering finish features sweet tannins.

Score: 89

Stephen Tanzer, International Wine Cellar 01 May 2004

Elegant, with nice berry and tobacco character and hints of vanilla. It's medium-bodied, with fine tannins and a light finish. The second wine of Haut-Brion. Best after 2005.
