What a beautiful and complete wine, with dark chocolate, crushed blackberry, cedar and raspberry on the nose. Full-bodied, with supersilky tannins and a beautiful licorice, tar and fruit aftertaste. Long and complex. Will improve with age, but delicious now. - '88/'98 Bordeaux blind retrospective (2008). Drink now. Score: 96 James Suckling, Wine Spectator 01 January 2009 |

The 1988 is built along the lines of the 1966, but better made and more concentrated. Medium-bodied, rich, and tannic, it will have to be cellared until the end of this century. Score: 91 Robert Parker, Wine Advocate, RobertParker.com Maturity: 200-2025 01 August 1993 |

The 1988 Haut-Batailley is a lightweight, lean, closed, hard-edged wine that lacks charm and finesse. The tannin level appears excessive for the fruit component. Score: 83 Robert Parker, Wine Advocate, RobertParker.com Maturity: 1993-1998 01 February 1993 |

The 1988 Haut-Brion is built along the lines of the 1966, but it is more concentrated and powerful. The dense bouquet of tobacco, ripe, black fruits and spicy oak has just begun to develop. The wine is medium-bodied, rich, and tannic, with a good inner-core of fruit. This wine will have to be cellared until the end of this century. Score: 91 Robert Parker, Wine Advocate, RobertParker.com Maturity: 2000-2025 01 January 1993 |
