Tasting Notes

The La Gaffeliere ‘98 is now reaching its peak with an attractive earthy nose with black cherries, struck match and spicebox. The palate is medium-bodied with crisp tannins, the alcoholic just a little obtrusive and perhaps needing a little more backbone towards the finish. Not a bad Saint Emilion, but this is one I would prefer to drink now rather than later. Tasted December 2012.

Very deep healthy crimson – still with notes of blue. Very rich and seductive on the nose. Fully evolved nose – very well married elements. Complete and impressive. Very fine tannins underneath should keep it going. Long. Well constructed. Rich, full and dramatic.

Elegant and soft, with admirable restraint as well as subtlety, yet surprising richness and seductiveness, the 1998 offers pure notes of strawberries and black cherries gently infused with high quality toasty oak. Round, medium-bodied, and well-balanced, it can be drunk now and over the next 12-14 years.

#69 Wine Spectator Top 100 2001 A big, Porty, raisiny wine. Very ripe plum and hints of mineral and spice on the nose. Full-bodied, thick and rich, with big, silky tannins. Slightly hot finish. Rather rustic but impressive. Best after 2006.

Score: 92
