Tasting Notes

I loved this bottle of 1982 Cos d'Estournel, and it was easily the best bottle I’ve had of this wine, which has always shown slightly tired and over the hill for me. It shows classic, even youthful notes of lead pencil, currants and saddle leather, was full-bodied, had beautiful depth of fruit, and a great, great finish, all pointing to a fully mature yet grand Saint Estephe. Drink up.

I have always loved this Cos d’Estournel, far more than either Montrose or Calon-Segur. Here it has a sensual nose of dark cherries, hot gravels, a cheeky scent of aniseed and roasted chestnuts. It has such personality and charm that you don’t care whether it was cropped at 250hl/ha (joke). The palate is full-bodied with good density and weight in the mouth. It is very harmonious with a fine seam of acidity and touches of roasted herbs and bay leaf towards the finish that perhaps is just beginning to lose its cohesion with age. Still, a Saint Estephe that you cannot help but enjoy.

This 1982 is still displaying a beautiful deep ruby/purple hue as well as a stunning set of aromatics consisting of blue and black fruits, loamy earth, flowers, licorice, and spice box. The wine is medium to full-bodied with sweet tannins, a medium to full-bodied mouthfeel, and a silky finish. It appears to have hit full maturity, but it can easily be held in a cold cellar for another 10+ years. Release price: ($115.00/case)

A spectacular performance for this wine, Cos d'Estournel's 1982 exhibits a dark ruby/purple color with light pink at the rim. Sweet aromas of jammy black fruits intermixed with roasted espresso and vanillin jump from the glass of this young, concentrated, full-bodied, succulent effort. An opulent texture, low acidity, and splendidly pure, concentrated, blackberry and cassis fruit suggest this 1982 can be drunk now, or cellared for another 15-20 years. An awesome wine!
