The 2010 Clos des Papes blanc, which as I said earlier is an equal part blend of Grenache blanc, Clairette, Roussanne, Picpoul, and Bourboulenc, is aged in stainless steel, with malolactic fermentation blocked to preserve all of its acidity. The 2010 displays honeyed grapefruit, licorice and an almost exotic pineapple note along with a hint of truffle. The wine has superb fruit, precision, minerality and freshness, and should drink nicely for 20-25 or more years. Score: 93 Robert Parker, Wine Advocate Maturity: 2011-2036 |

Stony, pure and driven, with melon rind, white peach and verbena notes offset by fine cut and precision, as mineral, salted butter and quinine notes ripple through the very lengthy finish. Lovely now, with the fine acidity to develop nicely in the cellar. Drink now through 2018 Score: 94 James Molesworth, Wine Spectator Maturity: 2011-2018 |

A blend of six grape varieties as usual. Vincent Avril says he’s finding more and more anis in his whites, ‘just in the first two years - nice, unless you want to wait for the mineral elements.’ This wine was bottled in early March 2011 (no wood, just aged on the lees) and is all sold, he told me proudlly. Lovely range of interesting spices on the nose with a suggestion of kumquats/orange peel. Great texture. The acidity is so marked, I asked whether he had added any tartaric. Apparently not, although he would have the right to use it. He relies substantially on the natural acidity of Piquepoul and Bourboulenc grapes. Good weight, but freshness too. Slight bitterness on the end in a refreshing way. Ends on a hint of grapefruit peel. Note that this wine will have a second drinking period in the third decade of the century.
