Tasting Notes

Tasted at the chateau, you are immediately struck by the smokiness of the nose: cooked meats, a touch of burnt buttered toast just explodes from the glass. The palate is full-bodied with an over-riding meatiness to it, lovely balance, fleshy as one expects from an ’85, but married to Grand-Puy-Lacoste’s inherent austerity this makes for a 'complete' wine experience. Savoury black fruits on the well-poised finish that just lacks the length of the ’90. But still a lovely wine. Tasted April 2008.

The 1985 has reached full maturity quickly. It is an excellent, nearly outstanding example of a juicy, succulent Pauillac oozing with sweet cedar, herb-tinged, black currant fruit. Medium to full-bodied, with low acidity, and a supple, nearly opulent texture, this wine is intensely charming and delicious. The only negative is the wine's short finish, which suggests it needs to be consumed over the next decade.

Burly wine. Deep and dark-colored with an iron backbone of tannins. Plenty of licorice and fruit character. Needs time to come into harmony. Better after 1998.
