Tasting Notes

Medium red, less saturated than the Echezeaux. Initially reduced aromas of smoke, truffle and underbrush showed some strawberry lift with aeration. Suave on entry, then dry and reticent in the middle, displaying more soil tones today than high-pitched primary fruits. Deeper than the Echezeaux but not yet as delineated. Finishes with broad, dusty tannins and excellent length. (92+ points)

Pale pinkish ruby. Oak spice is more cedary than on the Échezeaux, aromas overall a little less complex at the moment, more peppery and slightly sweeter fruit aroma. Also a very light floral note. Savoury and dry tannins and full of energy on the palate, though it seems a little more sober and reserved than the Échezeaux. Fine grained, freshness seems to come as much from the tannins as from the acidity though there is plenty of the latter. Overall less approachable now than the Échezeaux but with greater longevity, I would imagine. (JH)

Initially there is noticeable reduction and only aggressive swirling coaxes the otherwise densely fruited nose to reveal a broad array of classic Vosne spice elements that add nuance to the dark berry and rose petal aromas. The rich, full-bodied and palate staining flavors culminate in a beautifully focused and precise finish of stunning length. This is also excellent but the normal separation this enjoys over the Echézeaux does not appear to be present though perhaps time will restore the usual order. But for now though, I remain cautious.

Deeper crimson than the Échezeaux 2008 and also a bit reduced in late November 2009. (It had been racked the previous week.) For the first time ever I felt this wine could be described as gay in its historic sense: juicy, fresh and joyful, singing and cheerful. This wine just soars out of the glass. De Villaine pointed out that this wine is a little backward and he expects it to show a bit more purity over the months to come.
