Tasting Notes
The Poujeaux has a stern, slightly aloof bouquet with blackberry leaf, melted tar and wild strawberry. It unfurls nicely in the glass revealing fine sous-bois scents. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, plenty of vibrant red berry fruit with hints of bay and white pepper towards the finish. This is an impressive Poujeaux. Tasted at the Cru Bourgeois primeur tasting. A blend of 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot and 5% Petit Verdot, the Poujeaux 2010 has a crisp, well defined nose with fresh dark berried fruit, a touch of dark plum and a touch of Hoi Sin. Good definition and lift. The palate is medium-bodied with ripe, succulent tannins, quite modern in style but imbued with good tension and focus, this should be a little belter in bottle. The final blend in this vintage was 48% Cabernet Sauvignon, 45% Merlot and the rest Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc, tipping the scales at 14% natural alcohol. The wine is outstanding. Rich black raspberry and black currant fruit intermixed with some graphite and floral notes are followed by an opulent, fleshy, full-bodied wine with impressive concentration, texture and length. Moreover, the 2010 can be drunk early on in life or cellared for 15 or more years. Very close in quality to the brilliant 2009, this wine is the superstar of the appellation of Moulis. The estate is now owned by the Cuvelier family, who have overseen a major turn-around in quality at the famous St.-Emilion classified growth of Clos Fourtet. They have gotten this large vineyard of nearly 180 acres into top form as well. The vineyard is under the direction and management of two of the brilliant consultants of Bordeaux, Stephane Derenoncourt and Nicolas Thienpont, and they are doing a terrific job. The good news for consumers is that there are approximately 300,000 bottles of this brilliant wine from Moulis, which still sells at a fair price. An undeniable sleeper of the vintage, this may be the finest Poujeaux I have tasted in three decades. A crushed rock/mineral character is intertwined with abundant black currant, blackberry, incense and camphor notes in this full-bodied, unctuously textured, elegant, pure effort. It is capable of lasting 15 years. Kudos to new proprietor Philippe Cuvelier (also the owner of St.-Emilion’s Clos Fourtet) for resurrecting this well-known estate. This is a real fruitbomb, densely packed with super-ripe curranty fruit and a gorgeously plump texture. Structured but unforced and a big ripe finish. Generous and very easy to like. (Recommended) Score: 90 - 92 Albany Vintners, - 27 April 2011
First sample: Fresh, lively on the nose. Lots of fresh fruit. Almost aggressively fresh and raw! A bit tart and green. (score and tasting dates refer to the second.) Second sample: Particularly deep purple. Very, very rich. Taken right to the limit of ripeness. Yet there is freshness here too and the tannins, while a little drying, are not excessively painful. This is a very intense ambassador for 2010’s special qualities. Very fine tannins on the finish and lovely crunch. Pretty stolid and dense. Maybe a slight lack of acidity..?
