Tasting Notes

A major sleeper of the vintage, the 2010 Phelan-Segur has a dense ruby/purple color, ripe mulberry and black currant fruit intermixed with some floral notes, and a hint of subtle oak as well as touches of lavender and licorice. Layered, opulent, ripe and fleshy, this beauty should drink nicely for 10-15 years.

Score: 90

2010: A dense purple color along with rich minerality and sweet notes of boysenberries and raspberries are found in this 2010. The irrepressible Michel Rolland (the winemaking consultant at Phelan-Segur) has fashioned an impressively pure, deep, classic St.-Estephe with a supple personality as well as robust tannins. Cellar it for 2-3 years and drink it over the following 12-15 years.

Elegantly cedary freshness on the nose and a slight sweetness of fruit and oak. Smooth but quite dense tannins. Great depth of fruit and length but great freshness from the tannins. Pretty dense.

51%CS, 49%M. 50% new oak. Ripe, chunky fruit nose - blackberries and blueberries and vanilla. Robust and very big in the mouth with grippy tannins and a long, almost searing finish. Long term.

Score: 91 - 93

Albany Vintners, - 27 April 2011

Dark crimson. Nicely, convincingly integrated. Lovely luscious, supple fruit. Really great supple stuff with the undertow of St-Estèphe minerality. A really exciting wine. Very long.

Score: 18

Jancis Robinson MW, JancisRobinson.com Maturity: 2020-2035 21 April 2011

A blend of 41% Cabernet Sauvignon and 59% Merlot raised in 50% new oak, the nose takes its time to reveille in the glass: blackberry, small dark cherries, a touch of smoke and cigar box. Good definition but very tight. The palate is medium-bodied with powdery tannins, good definition but perhaps like Calon-Segur, a little disjointed at this stage. Good weight on the sinewy finish with dense black tarry fruits, quite uncompromising at the moment but that is not such a bad thing in the long term. The Phelan-Segur 2010 has good potential and may surprise in bottle just as the great 2005 is doing. Drink 2014-2025+ Tasted March 2011.

Rich, ripe, quite leathery fruit, very good lift and lovely potential complexity, always with a touch of spicy elegance.

Score: 17

Decanter, Decanter.com Maturity: 2017-2026 01 April 2011

Fleshy and inviting, with bittersweet cocoa, roasted tobacco, black currant preserve and warm fig sauce notes all defined and well-supported by dusty tannins.

This sneaks up on you, with blackberry and spices such as nutmeg and cloves. Full spices, with currants and berries. Builds on the palate like a wave.
