Tasting Notes

This is a quintessential blockbuster, no-compromise, massive, pedal-to-the-metal, balls-to-the-walls sort of wine with incredibly dense creme de cassis, kirsch, licorice, truffle and some background oak. Always one of the most concentrated and backward wines of the vintage, the 2010 is a prime example. I was interested to learn that the final blend and selection only produced about 625 cases of grand vin. Forget it for 10-15 years and drink it over the following century. (Oh, that's right - most of us won't be alive to challenge that estimate!) (96+ Points)

Having hit 15% natural alcohol, the 2010 seems much softer and accessible than most of its massively endowed peers. As I have said in the past, Clos de Sarpe is generally a wine for those with 19th century tastes. A blend of 85% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Franc cropped at a low 21 hectoliters per hectare, the 2010 exhibits a dense purple color as well as lots of creme de cassis, kirsch, licorice, incense and chalky notes. Dense and full-bodied as well as more supple than usual, this wine should be drinkable within the balance of my lifetime – unusual for this estate. Give it 5-7 years of cellaring, and drink it over the following 20-25 years.

Intense, nose of pruney fruit with a hint of banana. The palate is massive and chewy with lots of extract. Not a lot of charm. Overblown.
