Tasting Notes

The Carbonnieux 2010 is a little bashful on the nose, but it is quite elegant with light blackberry and boysenberry aromas, a touch of sous-bois and cigar box. Its precocity out of barrel seems to have abated. The palate is much more promising with fine tannins, a palpable sense of symmetry and great tension and poise on the finish. Once the aromatics reveille, this will be a great little Pessac-Leognan.

Score: 92

There is a touch of sur-maturite on the nose although the delineation is commendable and it seems to mellow in the glass, that over-ripeness diminishing. The palate is full-bodied and dominated by the tannins that seem to be fully ripe, whilst the finish demonstrates good delineation and persistency. This has very good potential. Tasted April 2011.

Extremely soft, up-front, classic Pessac-Leognan, the 2010 Carbonnieux possesses plenty of unsmoked cigar tobacco, roasted herbs, lavender, sweet kirsch and black currant fruit and sweet tannin. Seductive, lush and sensual, it is rather Burgundian in its elegant, savory, evolved style. Drink it over the next 15-20 years.

Abundant minerality, spicy unsmoked cigar tobacco and red and black currant characteristics emerge from this medium to full-bodied Pessac-Leognan. Displaying more power, depth, muscle and tannin than usual, this opaque ruby/purple-hued 2010 should evolve for 20-25 years.

Inky. Ripe dark damson fruit but not in the least overripe. Cassis too. More severe on the palate than I expected. Lovely and dry and already scented on the mid palate. Fragrant and firm, dense but fine tannins. One for the long term.

Very dark indeed. Well-integrated nose with some juicy fruit suggestion. Silky sweet start and then very marked tannins. Dry to drying finish. A tiny bit severe on the finish for now. Demands time.

Good depth of ripe cassis fruit, tobacco leaf nose, good length, needs to settle down.

Very pure, with a lovely, supple feel to the structure and long, unadorned red currant, raspberry and cherry fruit that sails along. Shows flickers of warm stone and spice on the finish.

Score: 89 - 92
