Tasting Notes

The 2010 Belgrave has a generous and nicely detailed bouquet with plenty of red berry fruit laced with brown spices. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins, slightly more on the austere side with a classic tobacco-tinged finish and impressive persistence. This is worth seeking out.

The Belgrave 2010 has a refined nose with crisp, tobacco-infused Cabernet Sauvignon leading the way with good definition. The palate is medium-bodied with firm tannins, dried herbs, cedar and sandalwood. You might think there was a bit of bottle age on this sample, but I appreciate the balance and classicism on the well-mannered finish. Tasted April 2011.

I tasted the 2010 Belgrave several times and found it less impressive than I had hoped it would be, since I wrote it was a sleeper of the vintage from barrel. Nevertheless, the wine is still excellent. Dark ruby purple, slightly austere and closed, but exhibiting some tobacco leaf, black currant, vanillin, spice and earth, it should drink nicely for 15 or more years.

One of the finest Belgraves I have ever tasted, this sleeper of the vintage boasts an opaque purple color along with abundant aromas of blackberries and cassis, a classy mid-palate, medium to full-bodied flavors, superb depth and crisp freshness as well as liveliness. Over recent years the large negociant firm of Dourthe has been making improvements and resurrecting the quality of this forgotten Medoc classified growth. The 2010 will benefit from 2-3 years of cellaring and should keep for 15 or more.

A Fifth growth situated just outside St Julien. Usually great value. Lovely thick blackcurrant fruit with plenty of glycerol and spice underpinned by good acidity and peppery tannins.

Very dark purple. Hugely voluptuous with a riper nose than many of its peers. Very jazzy and polished with great energy. Marked acidity and fine-grained sandy tannins. Really racy. Thick and racy at the same time. Creamy texture. Fine and fine tannins though without enormous depth or breadth of fruit but nicely controlled for early drinking. Super clean.

Deep cassis fruit, rich, many-layered texture and smooth ripe tannins, a sophisticated wine from a château in constant improvement.

This has a lovely caressing mouthfeel, with pure violet, plum and cassis notes gliding along. Subtle toast frames the finish.
