Tasting Notes:

The finest Batailley I have had in many years, the dense purple-colored 2009 exhibits a boatload of tannin as well as sweet, caramelized, black currant fruit intermixed with hints of charcoal, cedarwood and smoke, a full-bodied mouthfeel and the aforementioned high, but sweet, well-integrated tannin displaying no jaggedness. Batailley often requires considerable patience as it can be one of the longest-lived Pauillacs. Atypically for Batailley, the 2009 should be ready to drink in 5-7 years and keep for three decades.

Score: 94 Robert Parker, Wine Advocate Maturity: 2017-2047

Currant and blackberry on the nose, with hints of toasted oak. Full-bodied, with big, chewy tannins. This is the biggest Batailley in years. Lots of improvement here.

Score: 92 - 95 James Suckling, Wine Spectator

Very dark blackish crimson. Very fine - lovely ripeness but not too sickly sweet. A lightly savoury note. Mouthfilling and very flattering - pretty sweet on the palate. Chewy end.

Score: 17 Jancis Robinson MW, Jancisrobinson.com Maturity: 2016-2026

Inky ruby. Red fruits, licorice, dried herbs and cedary oak on the nose. Then dense and fine-grained in the mouth, with a distinctly cool quality to the blackcurrant jelly, red cherry and candied violet flavors. This rich, smooth wine boasts lovely depth of flavor and finishes with a strong herbal aftertaste and mounting, mouthcoating tannins. A very successful Batailley to forget about in your cellar for 6 to 8 years, and then enjoy for another 15 to 20 after that.

Score: 89 - 91 Ian D'Agata, International Wine Cellar

Tasted at the chateau. The Batailley was great out of barrel and is great in bottle. The nose has superb precision, not immensely powerful but very refined and focused, redolent of its neighbour Grand Puy Lacoste. The palate is very composed with succulent tannins, very refined with a spicy, vibrant finish that is filled with joy. Excellent.

Score: 94 Neal Martin, erobertparker.com

Blackberry, dark chocolate and currants on the nose, follow through to a full body, with beautifully polished tannins and a long caressing finish. Fresh and refined. Best ever from here. Always excellent value. Try after 2018.
