Tasting Notes

Understated and very pure on the nose: pure crushed strawberry and Morello on the nose. Wonderful definition. The palate is medium-bodied with very fine tannins, harmonious, sensual, poised on the finish with hints of orange zest and apricot. This may merit an even higher score in the future. Tasted February 2011.

Bright medium red. Precise, perfumed aromas of raspberry, cherry, minerals, spices and flowers; seems less oaky today than the Clos des Ruchottes despite the fact that it began in 60% new oak. Densely packed, sappy and aromatic, with the sweet oak component supporting the red fruit and spice flavors. The very long, slowly building finish really perfumes the palate and lingers with great vigor.

A discreet touch of wood frames an aromatically fresh, ultra elegant, spicy and bright nose of intense pure pinot fruit, cherry and raspberry notes where both the spice and earth notes continue onto the delicious, rich and full-bodied flavors built on a base of concentrated minerality and stunning length. This is one classy wine that offers impeccable balance and a Zen-like poise.

Mint, sage, smoked meat, citrus oils, kirsch and framboise penetratingly yet almost ethereally scent Rousseau’s 2008 Gevrey-Chambertin Clos St.-Jacques. Sleek and juicy on the palate, it conveys a sense of vibrancy and lift vis-a-vis other wines in the present collection. Fresh ginger and citrus oils lend bittersweet, oily sizzle to a clinging, dynamic finish full of vivacious fresh red fruits. If a great Gevrey could pass as white wine, it would be this one. I suspect it will perform well for 12-15 years, but would not simply forget it for that long.

Mid crimson and bluer than most Rousseau 2008s. Introvert. Sweet, juicy and playful. Quite deceptive because it’s so light, fresh and lively. This could easily be overlooked in a blind tasting but it’s lively, fresh and admirable with lots of stuffing underneath. It’s all on the finish. Quite a bit of body and admirable persistence. Very promising but patience is required.
