Tasting Notes

The estate’s second wine, the 2004 Bahans-Haut-Brion, possesses a similar character, but is lighter and softer than the Haut Brion, with notes of red and black currants, plum, and earth. Consume it over the next decade.

Score: 88

This estate’s second wine, the Bahans Haut-Brion, is a light, tart, fresh, feminine effort in 2004. Although lacking in fat and meatiness, it should provide pleasant drinking over the next 7-8 years.

Sweet tobacco and fruit on the nose. Medium-bodied, with fine tannins and a long, fresh, plummy aftertaste. Lacks some concentration but is pleasing. Best after 2007. 8,500 cases made.

Score: 87

James Suckling, Wine Spectator 31 March 2007

Tasted from cuve Good full ruby-red. Explosive aromas of smoky raspberry, tobacco and minerals. Supple, fleshy and sweet, if without the concentration and power of the 2005. But this is seamless, elegant and impeccably balanced, and finishes with gentle, fine-grained tannins.

Score: 88 - 90

[CS 73%, 22%, CF5%] Rather smudgy and gorgeous on the nose. Some autumnal notes. Very evolved and soft. Easy to drink now but with Haut Brion character in spades. Quite rigorous and gentle. Definite framework but with lots of fruit in the middle. Slightly leafy note.

Much more terroir on the nose here. Riper, more complex: very earthy with notes of wild strawberry and raspberry. This is a very smooth, suave Bahans. Well-integrated tannins. Seamless texture though lacking some persistency and grip. Mid-palate is a bit one-dimensional. Good early drinking, but I prefer La Chapelle this year. Tasted April 2005.

Score: 89 - 91
