Tasting Notes

Blueberries, blackberries and flowers on the nose, follow through to a full body, with chewy tannins and mineral, violets and blueberry aftertaste. Structured. Needs time to soften. Try in 2016.

Score: 92

Very spicy and rich on the nose. Full-bodied, with chewy tannins that turn round and soft. Lots of fruit, too. Yummy wine. Tasted twice, with consistent notes.

Rated 4* in the Decanter Cru Bourgeois 2009 Panel Tasting. Feb 2012 Positive aromas of ripe forest fruit, spice, grilled red pepper and ash. Fresh-tasting fruit which is pure and long with refined underlying tannins. More classic than many. Has character and class. 16.88 out of 20

The Serilhan 2009 has a more introverted bouquet at this primordial stage, although there is certainly a lot of fruit concentration that reluctantly opens in time : blackberry, blueberry, a touch of sage and cedar. The palate is medium-bodied with an attractive citric thread, firm tannins and lots of freshness and vitality towards the vibrant finish. A joyous Saint Estephe.

Tasted privately and at Vintex. This has a very pure, very well defined nose with gorgeous floral scents married with black cherry, a touch of cassis, plum and creamy new oak. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, a nice edginess to this Saint Estephe with a very well judged, beautifully delineated finish. This is a very classy Serilhan: pure delight and a name to watch out for in the future.

57% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot, 8% Cabernet Franc. Dark, lustrous crimson. Neat, nicely balanced, nothing out of kilter. Very juicy and positive. Lovely purity. Just the ticket (for a St-Estèphe)! New Worlders might find this a little austere. 13.5%

Extremely dark purplish crimson. Heart-rending tiny photograph of the family wedding in 1930 on the label. Fresh and very lively and sweet. Lots of fine tannin and ambition. Not the densest wine but lots of confidence and potential. Pretty dry finish but no overripeness. This should reward those who wait. 16.5 points

A very good effort from Serilhan, which is now being made by Hubert de Bouard, the 2009 (48% Cabernet Sauvignon, 45% Merlot, and 7% Cabernet Franc) possesses a lush texture, sweet black fruits intermixed with licorice and floral notes, good acidity and freshness, and 13.85% alcohol. Drink it over the next 10-15 years.

Now one of the rising stars of the appellation, Serilhan really impressed us this year. Technical Director Bernard Franc has previously worked at both Pontet Canet and Lafon Rochet and now Hubert de Bouard has been engaged as consultant. Fresh and rich berry fruit with some spicy, toasty notes. Excellent ripeness of Cabernet fruit with lots of verve and berries in the middle. Nicely textured, fresh and ripe with good structure.
