Tasting Notes

Dark and brooding. Still a bit of oak on the nose. Very backward. Rugged tannins and pretty austere fruit at the moment. To be kept for a long time, very dry! (16.5+ points)

The 2004 is developing a lovely ripe nose of wild strawberry, black cherry, redcurrant and a touch of vanilla. The palate is medium-bodied, very well balanced with good delineation. It has some lovely ripe Cabernet, but maintaining that classic line of Saint Julien. Very harmonious with a delectable tobacco finish. Perhaps a little 'conservative' but well crafted. Drink now-2016. Tasted September 2008.

This backward, tannic, strikingly oaky St.-Julien reveals a big structure as well as copious power and muscle, and a modern-styled combination of ripe fruit and new oak. While it requires a few years of bottle age to shed its cloak of tannin, and develop more Bordelais character, it possesses plenty of stuffing, and may turn out to be outstanding with additional time in bottle. Patience is warranted. (89+ points)

Deep ruby-red. Plum, leather, mocha, coffee and smoke on the nose. Ripe on entry, then moderately sweet in the middle, with a lightly herbal quality and some unabsorbed acidity currently giving the wine a slightly disjointed character. With its flavors of currant, tobacco and smoke, this comes across as fatter than some past vintages but today the tannins are apparent, and the finish shows a dry edge. I find the young 2006 riper, denser and more harmonious.

Score: 87

Stephen Tanzer, International Wine Cellar 01 May 2007

Aromas of blackberry and cherry follow through to a medium-bodied palate, with fine tannins and a fresh finish. Balanced and refined. Best after 2009. 25,000 cases made.
