Tasting Notes

The medium garnet colored 2009 du Tertre conjures notions of kirsch, black raspberries, warm plums and potpourri on the nose with hints of sage and menthol. The palate is medium-bodied, soft, juicy and seductively approachable with a lively finish.

Score: 92

The 2009 du Tertre has a very ripe, rather smudged and over the top bouquet. This feels a little one-dimensional at the moment. The palate is much better with pure black cedar-infused fruit, a touch of pencil lead and gentle grip towards the precise finish. I suspect the aromatics are going through a sullen phase, it will come through on the other side, so give this another couple of years in bottle.

Tasted at the chateau and UGC. Cropped at 33hl/ha, a blend of 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 22% Merlot, 8% Petit Verdot (the highest ever) and 15% Cabernet Franc, 15% pressed wine. The harvest started 28th September until 13th October. The nose is very tight at the moment, quite masculine with the Cabernet Franc lending quite a leafy accent. Moderate definition. The palate is medium-bodied very taut but nicely balanced, the tannins a little firmer and less supple than others, but it is in synch with the fruit. More introspective than say, Marquis de Terme, with an agreeable tang of dark chocolate towards the dry, slightly obdurate finish. Moderate length. I am sure this will show better in another 1-2 months time. Tasted March 2010.

Smoky black fruits on the nose are accompanied by some clear caramel edging. You can feel the heat and generosity of the vintage on the palate, and it's a little more evolved than you might expect for a classified Margaux, but it would be churlish to complain about the silk-textured pleasure on display in this glass.

Jane Anson, Decanter.com Maturity: 2019-2036 07 February 2019

Quite perfumy at first, with lilac, damson plum and singed bay leaf notes up front, followed by darker yet still caressing steeped black cherry, worn leather and espresso notes on the back end. Best from 2013 through 2023.

James Molesworth, Wine Spectator Maturity: 2013-2023 31 March 2012

A seductive, opulent, textured Margaux with notes of licorice, black fruits, asphalt, pen ink and truffle, this is one of the finest du Tertres ever made. It has a hedonistic quality to it, but at the same time, there is great class, precision and freshness to this full-bodied, concentrated, but very supple-textured wine. Drink it over the next 20+ years.

A very sexy, seductive style of wine has been produced by Du Tertre in 2009. A dense ruby/purple color is accompanied by ripe notes of red and black fruits intermixed with subtle smoke, ink, and damp earth. The lusciousness continues on the palate with an opulent, layered, rich mouthfeel. Medium to full-bodied with not a hard edge to be found, but plenty of ripe tannins, the overall impression is one of a hedonistic and intellectually pleasing claret that should drink beautifully for 20+ years. This is a sleeper of the vintage among the classified-growths. (Tasted two times.)

Floral and perfumed, with blackberry and blueberry. Full and silky, with a lovely finish. Balanced. Lovely chocolaty character and texture. Big improvement. 55 percent Cabernet Sauvignon, 22 percent Merlot, 15 percent Cabernet Franc and 8 percent Petit Verdot.

Fine deep red, good briary berry fruit with concentration and elegance, good florality, length, structure and very good potential. Drink 2015-25. (17.5 points)

Lightly treacly nose. Interesting. Very different sort of nose. The fruit is kept in check – not too aggressively sweet. Tamped down to provide much more of a classic Margaux style but with lots of pleasure. Very cool indeed.
