Tasting Notes

Dark red. Very ripe aromas of plum, mocha, coffee, earth and fresh herbs. Lush, smooth and sweet, with palate-coating flavors of currant, earth and smoky oak. Suave, accessible Margaux, finishing with a fine dusting of tannins and spreading out impressively on the back end. Very good subtle length here.

Score: 91

Another incredibly successful sleeper of the vintage, the 2008 Lascombes confirms just how many top 2008s were produced. A dark plum/ruby/purple-tinged color is followed by a sexy, up-front perfume of forest floor, damp earth, blue and red fruits and a touch of spicy oak. Lush with low acidity and sweet tannin, it appears to be a bigger version of the stunning 2008 Malescot St.-Exupery. Drink it over the next 15 or more years - it is well-worth buying by the case.

Sweet plum, black cherry, and cassis notes intermixed with floral, licorice, spice box, and forest floor scents result in a complex set of aromatics. The wine possesses medium to full body, a round, gentle mouthfeel, ripe tannin, and fresh acids with no evidence of oak. This is a more restrained, less exuberant effort than Lascombes has produced in several recent vintages. Drink this impressively-endowed, well-made 2008 between 2011-2030+.

Dark, but still tangy, with a nice black tea note running through the fleshy dark plum, black currant and licorice notes. A smoky edge fans out on the full-bodied finish, where good minerality lingers. Drink now through 2014. 25,000 cases made.

Tasted at the UGC 2008 tasting in London. This has a well-defined nose with cranberry, redcurrant and a touch of leather with fine definition. The palate is medium-bodied with firm, chewy tannins, red-berried fruit with leather and cedar, dense and lacking a little finesse towards the finish. Tasted October 2010.

This has a deep broody nose that actually closes down in the glass. There is a façade of sweet ripe violet-tinged cassis but underneath there is just a touch of greenness. The palate is very smooth, fine tannins but lacking real structure and grip. Very toasty on the finish but it lacks freshness and tension. Overdone.

Dark crimson. Medium intensity and some mossiness on the nose. Sweet, seductive start - a Pomerol from Margaux. Very rich and soft and velvety with the fine tannins coming in towards the end. Not very Margaux but certainly very opulent. Be aware of the style! Finish dries the palate a bit at the moment.
