Tasting Notes

The millennial Batailley has a similar nose to last January: very ripe and perhaps more open than its peers, with blackberry, damson, raspberries and a touch of liquorice. Generous at this early stage. The palate is very smooth on the entry, assertive tannins and as I have written before, not the most refined Pauillac of the finish, but it has a lovely burly, powerful finish that shows just a touch more structure than previous example. Very fine.

Score: 92

Tasted at the Chateau Batailley dinner at The Square. The millennial Batailley has a lively, ripe nose of blackberry, damson, orange peel and candied raspberries, then later a hint of liquorice. The palate is medium-bodied with good density, a forceful 2000 that wants to make an impression but perhaps compensates in terms of its finesse compared to say, the 2005. Ripe, fleshy and well structured towards the tensile finish. This surpasses anything produced in the 1990s. Drink 2012-2020+ Tasted January 2010.

Black currant, licorice, damp earth, moss, and fresh porcini mushroom characteristics emerge from this dark plum/ruby-colored Pauillac. It is not as strong, powerful, or deep as more recent vintages of Batailley, with noticeable, but not excessive tannin as well as medium body. Drink it over the next 7-8 years.

Dark plum/garnet in color, this wine is tight, hard, closed down, and difficult to penetrate. Neither complicated nor flashy, it reveals good weight and fine ripeness, but the finish seems abrupt, and the wine largely austere and unimpressive. Hopefully, more will emerge with cellaring. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2020.

Aromas of blackberry and cherry follow through to a full-bodied palate, with fine tannins and a caressing finish. Layered, beautiful and just starting to come around. Much better than when previously tasted. Best after 2008. 22,000 cases made.
