Mortet’s 2005 Clos Vougeot - from a single parcel below the Chateau de la Tour - smells of game and red meat and berries, offers encouraging fullness and sweetness of fruit on the palate but shows some overt oakiness and a bit less textural refinement than most of this year’s collection, and finishes with smoky, charred meat and caramelized fruit flavors. I detected a slight bit of heat, before being informed that this was the one wine in the group that reached 14% alcohol. Score: 89 - 90 David Schildknecht, Wine Advocate |

Remnants of the strong reduction this showed from cask are still present and I would strongly suggest decanting this if you're going to venture trying this young. The intense flavors however are big, rich and sleekly muscled with a reserve of power that is impressive, underpinned by suave and dusty tannins that coat the mouth. This is a stylish and classy wine for a young Clos de Vougeot and assuming the reduction eventually dissipates, this should be very special. Score: 93 Allen Meadows, Burghound Maturity: 2015+ |

Good deep red. Wild aromas of black cherry, mint, licorice, leather and game, plus a whiff of eucalyptus. Densely packed and sweet, with powerful, chewy flavors of chocolate, espresso, licorice and game. Less perfumed than the Lavaux but with no shortage of personality. Finishes with substantial tannins. Give this six or seven years in the cellar. Score: 92 Stephen Tanzer, International Wine Cellar |
