Tasting Notes

The 2007 Pape Clement has a pure and refined bouquet, perhaps not with the same charm and personality of say Domaine de Chevalier or Haut-Bailly, yet with panache and class, kirsch and touches of blue fruit laced with cedar and graphite. The palate is medium-bodied with a touch of menthol on the entry. It is a slightly more exotic take on the vintage compared to its peers, yet there is commendable substance and spiciness on the finish that keeps you coming back. Tasted February 2017.

This has a very fine nose – not over-extracted like some other Pessac reds but intense with good delineation and clarity: blackberry, cedar and smoke. The palate is well balanced, good fruit concentration and acidity with an ripe, intense, streamlined finish of blackberry and raspberry leaf. Very primal, but I like the focus and the energy in this Pape-Clement.

One of the stars of the vintage, this blend of 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot, and the rest Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot reveals sweet burning ember, charcoal, barbecue smoke, black currant, plum, and graphite notes. This opulent, impressively endowed, medium to full-bodied 2007 possesses sweet tannin and a long finish. It can be drunk now or cellared for 12-15 years.

Blackberry and mineral aromas, with hints of dried flowers, truffle and tobacco. Full-bodied, with a wonderful balance of cool fruit and fine tannins. Classy for the vintage. Best after 2012. 8,335 cases made.

Lots of blackberry, truffle, grilled meat and mineral character. Medium-to-full body, firm tannins and a caressing finish.

Blackish purple. Some strange dominant oak note on the nose obscures the fruit. Drying tannins on the palate – no mellifluous easy drinking here. Extraction overdone? Very dry finish – seems made as though 2007 had delivered fruit with 2005 concentration, which it didn’t of course. A rare miss for Bernard Magrez’s flagship wine on the basis of this sample.

Bright purple. Toasty, oaky nose. Sweetly fruity palate with supple structure and refreshing acidity. Elegant style, but slight greenness at the finish. Good. Drink 2016-23.

Rather odd pungent nose - complex with animal notes, toasty oak and cigar smoke. Supple and rich with chocolatey fruit, a sweet finish and crisp acidity.
