Tasting Notes

The 2007 La Chapelle de la Mission Haut Brion feels a little smudged on the nose, one that is missing the breeding and complexity of the first four Pessac-Léognan wines in this flight. The palate is medium-bodied, a little chewy in the mouth with dusky black fruit but missing length on the finish. It feels a bit like a car running on three pistons. Tasted March 2015.

A blend of 64% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon and 6% Cabernet Franc. A lucid purple/garnet colour. The nose displays moderate intensity, quite reserved at first pouring although there appears to be more fruit concentration that in recent years, possibly because of the addition of fruit from late La Tour Haut-Brion. With a few swirls it becomes richer with scents of blackberry, black plum with some a touch of liquorice. The palate is full-bodied, quite spicy and rich, a more decadent second wine of La Mission, with touches of pain grille, blueberries and blackcurrant towards the finish. It probably does not have the finesse it could potentially achieve although it compensate with a certain lusciousness rare in this vintage.

The 2007 La Chapelle de la Mission is a spicy effort revealing notes of unsmoked cigar tobacco, bay leaf, incense, Christmas fruitcake, and black currants. It is a round, easy-going wine to enjoy over the next 7-8 years.

Robert Parker, Wine Advocate, RobertParker.com Maturity: 2010-2018 30 April 2010

64% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Cabernet Franc. Dark glowing crimson. Very full, luscious ripe red fruit aromas. Then a little skinny and slightly tart on the palate. No great depth but perfectly pleasant. Just a bit scrawny towards the end. Very flattering nose and then a bit light on the palate. Decidedly inky, astringent finish.
