Tasting Notes

The 2007 Suduiraut was cropped at 16hl/ha. It has a similar bouquet to the bottle I last encountered in 2016. It opens gradually with scents of dried honey, apricot blossom and a touch more melted wax than I recall. The palate is very well balanced with intense botrytised fruit, a fine line of acidity, perhaps just a little drier than it was a couple of years back, though developing intriguing notes of mandarin, tangerine, white pepper and Clementine. It is drinking beautifully now although it will clearly continue to age gracefully over another two decades. 131gm/L residual sugar. Tasted at the Suduiraut vertical at the château.

The 2007 Suduiraut is a Sauternes that is just beginning to "motor" as it approaches its tenth birthday. The bouquet is much more open than when I last tasted this wine in 2011, with upfront honey, lemon rind and apricot blossom aromas that pack a punch. The palate is powerful and intense, layers of honeyed fruit, crisp acidity and the Sauvignon Blanc component now giving way more to Sémillon. This is a Sauternes of width and girth and as such it deserves another decade in bottle. Just superb.

I bought a bottle of 2007 Château Suduiraut to remember Denis Dubourdieu who passed away that morning. Without a Doisy-Daëne in hand, I felt that he had to be toasted with a Sauternes, and though far too young, this powerful Suduiraut has a long way to go.

The nose takes time to coalesce in the glass, very pure with honey, white peach, Turkish Delight honeysuckle, and beeswax. The palate is beautifully balanced, still with some oak to be subsumed, but has great depth and precision. This is a confident, almost ambitious Suduiraut with great power and intensity towards the botrytis-rich, viscous finish that is endowed with great persistency. Lovely. Drink now-2030.

From a blend made one month ago (in two barrels.) This has a well-defined nose, complex with touches of clear honey, acacia, hints of orange-blossom. Very well focused on the palate, with superb marriage of nervosité (from the first two tries) and the botrytis concentration of the later tries. Citrus fruits, a touch of orange zest towards the finish. Not a rich, weighty, viscous Suduiraut, this is more about tension and vibrancy. An understated Suduiraut for the vintage but well-crafted. Tasted April 2008.

Dried lemon and floral aromas lead to loads of botrytis spice and bitter lemon peel in this young, full-bodied sweetie, with hints of lively lime and honey. Medium sweet. Very intense. Best after 2014.

James Suckling, Wine Spectator Maturity: 2014+ 31 March 2010

Solid baby sticky, with a core of apple pie, honey and spicy fruit on the palate. Medium- to full-bodied, with medium sweetness and a lively finish.

Green gold. Muted, almost dry nose. Very sweet start though a little on the hot barley sugar side rather than wonderfully fine and nuanced. A bit sugary. Astringent finish but massive sugar levels even if not fine. Chewy end. Gone for bust! Not quite as fine at this stage as I have come to expect of this property.

A wine marked by its purity, freshness and honeyed, unctuous flavour as well as searing freshness and length. It has the breed of a great wine.

Intense nose of exotic stone fruit and honey. Full bodied and structured with grapefruit acidity set against thick, fleshy rich peachy fruit. Massively concentrated and sweet with a long finish.
