Tasting Notes

The 2007 Haut Batailley actually had a very similar bouquet to the Batailley, though there is more red fruit here with a subtle scent of Tuscan delicatessen emerging with time. The palate is medium-bodied with crisp tannin, a pleasant chewiness on the entry, solid and armed with commendable presence, even with some sinew on the finish. Sure, it is a bit rough around the edges, though it is probably the best example of this particular wine that I have tasted. Tasted February 2017.

Cropped at 46hl/ha, this has a deep garnet/purple core. The nose has moderate intensity although it lacks the precision of the 2006. Blackberries, tinctures of mulberry and fresh tobacco, developing touches of violets with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied, quite peppery, the tannins a little brusque at this early juncture, the finish dry and savoury, though lacking the weight and delineation I would like to have seen. A 'capable' Haut-Batailley.

Aromas of sweet berries and flowers lead to a medium body, with a delicate fruit palate, silky tannins and a fresh finish. Best after 2011. 7,085 cases made.

Very pretty, with berry and sweet tobacco character. Medium body, fine tannins and a fresh and fruity finish. Delicious already.

James Suckling, Wine Spectator 01 April 2008

Good ruby-red. Ripe aromas of currant, tobacco, cedar and chocolate. Supple, sweet and easygoing, with good fleshy texture but modest intensity and thrust to the dark fruit, chocolate, menthol and cedar flavors. Finishes with slightly dry tannins and a rather soft structure.

Stephen Tanzer, International Wine Cellar 20 May 2008

70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, Mid claret. Very rich and full and round, Very slightly inky but massive and opulent. A little dry and green on the finish but pretty glamorous. Some freshness. A little chewy. Xavier Borie said the big challenge was to keep freshness.
