Tasting Notes

The 2007 Pavillon Rouge du Chateau Margaux has a crisp and well defined bouquet of black dusky fruit, sandalwood, bay leaf and a touch of warm gravel. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin and impressive structure. There is a linearity about this Pavillon Rouge, with a dash of white pepper towards the finish, as it clings to the mouth and says, I'm going to last longer than you think in bottle. This initially suggested a drinking window of around a decade, but now a decade on, it has other ideas. Tasted February 2017.

A deep garnet/purple colour. The nose is lacking a little definition and brightness (perhaps due to the miserable weather when tasting?) Brambly black fruits, a touch of wild hedgerow and a little earth. The palate is very clean on the entry, well defined with a slight grainy texture. Compact, perhaps a little earthier than usual, more tertiary but the finish has not so much a great depth, but a tangible succulence to it, whilst finishing with a sprinkle of white pepper. Moderate length.

The richly fruity, delicious, already complex 2007 Pavillon Rouge du Chateau Margaux is best consumed over the next 7-8 years.

58% cabernet sauvignon, 37% merlot and 5% petit verdot. Bright red-ruby. Very fresh aromas of cassis, raspberry, minerals, licorice and flowers. Supple and nicely fine-grained but a bit lean, with a faint herbal/peppery quality giving this moderately dense wine a dry edge. Finishes with a firm spicy quality and good length, but could use a bit more sweetness of fruit.

57% Cabernet Sauvignon, 38% Merlot, 5% Petit Verdot (because the Petit Verdot didn’t reach the optimum level of ripeness and so didn’t make it into the grand vin). Very aromatic. Mid purplish crimson with a weak rim. Looks a lot weaker than Alter Ego. Very fresh revitalising nose, pretty weak on the palate. But fine. For the first time I could taste something like stewed apples! Very soft gentle texture but without much density. Fragrant, dry finish, Pretty long. Quite a different expression from the more voluptuous Alter Ego, Very light and dry. Certainly a very valid expression of Margaux. 13%

Good colour, attractively fragrant nose of fresh red berry fruit that starts discreetly and grows in the glass, a wine of breed and balance. Drink 2011-20.

Even deep crimson. Powerful, pungent nose with wild berries, spice and undergrowth. Nice weight of robust fruit. Round with good substantial but smooth-grained tannins. Perhaps not quite as charming as usual but a good wine.

A fresh and fruity young red, with currant and light vanilla aromas and flavors. Even a little white truffle. Medium-bodied, with fine tannins and a delicate finish.
