Tasting Notes

Grand Mayne’s 2005 (a blend of 75% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Franc and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon) is a sexy, fleshy St.-Emilion with a dense ruby/purple color and loads of blueberry, cassis and black raspberry fruit. It is medium to full-bodied, luscious, and already drinkable, although capable of lasting another 10-15 years.

Score: 92

Classic aromas of blueberries, cedar, vanillin, black currants, and spring flowers jump from the glass of this dense purple-colored St.-Emilion. Broad, rich, jammy fruit flavors compete with the full-bodied, highly-extracted style that exhibits moderate tannin as well as excellent overall harmony and purity. This cuvee tends to be made in a dense, chewy style, and the 2005 may ultimately rival Grand-Mayne’s brilliant 1998. Anticipated maturity: now-2022. A sleeper of the vintage!

Tasted single blind at Southwold. This has a ripe nose with blackberry, liquorice and a hint of minerals. A tannic palate, nice grip, well balanced with ripe plum and mulberry. Chocolaty finish - good personality with very good weight. Showy and decadent as always. Drink 2012-2020+ Tasted January 2009.
