Tasting Notes

A 100% Merlot offering, the 2006 Faugeres Cuvee Speciale Peby comes from a southeast facing hillside site on limestone soils. It is one of the most concentrated wines of the vintage. Big and substantial with extraordinary intensity, abundant notes of graphite, blueberries, blackberry liqueur, and smoky oak, this dense, chewy 2006 requires plenty of cellaring. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2025. (93+ points)

Robert Parker, Wine Advocate, RobertParker.com Maturity: 2014-2025 01 February 2009

Produced from the estate’s oldest vines (45 years), the 2006 Faugeres Cuvee Speciale Peby is a 1,000-case cuvee of 100% Merlot. Revealing a mint note reminiscent of California’s Heitz Martha’s Vineyard, along with plenty of creme de cassis, graphite, and pain grille, it is full-bodied, dense, moderately tannic, and impressively deep as well as pure. It requires 5-6 years of cellaring, and should last for two decades.

Shows blackberry jam, chocolate and lots of new wood on the nose. Full-bodied, with chewy tannins and a juicy finish. This is rich and concentrated for the vintage. Solid.

Score: 92

James Suckling, Wine Spectator 28 January 2009

Plummy and chocolaty, with a full body, medium chewy tannins and a long finish. Solid.

James Suckling, Wine Spectator 01 April 2007

Notably dark blackish crimson. Very oaky - Mendoza Malbec surely?! Full and scented and very opulent with floral notes. A dramatic drink (if you wait for the dry tannins to fade) but not for you if you have a folk memory of traditional Saint-Émilion. Fades a bit on the finish.

Jancis Robinson MW, JancisRobinson.com Maturity: 2013-2020 18 April 2007

The limited production super-cuvée of Chateau Faugères, overseen by Michel Rolland and Stephan von Neipperg (of Canon La Gaffeliere and La Mondotte). 100% Merlot from old vines with an average age of 40 years, yielding 25hl/ha, aged in 100% new oak for 18 months. A rich nose of leather and spiky fruit. Tons of extract here with chewy tannins and a hot finish.

Score: 88 - 90
