Tasting Notes

Carved from a six-acre parcel of the Fombrauge estate, there are only around 360-500 cases of this luxury cuvee from Bernard Magrez. Barrel-fermented with the Burgundy-styled punching down, called pigeage, it is a blend of 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc. The formidable 2006 is a full-bodied, powerful, opaque purple-hued effort offering notes of graphite, blueberries, blackberries, chocolate, and hints of smoke and kirsch. Sexy, opulent, and fleshy, it is surprisingly approachable for a young vintage of this cuvee, and should drink beautifully for 15 or more years.

Robert Parker, Wine Advocate, RobertParker.com Maturity: 2009-2024 01 February 2009

More structured, tannic, and backward than usual, without the flesh and opulence of vintages such as 2005, 2001, and 2000, this blend of 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc exhibits a saturated ruby/purple color as well as notes of graphite, black raspberries, cherries, and currants. There is plenty of noticeable new oak, but the wine possesses enough structure and concentration to handle the wood. I suspect malolactic had recently been completed as this 2006 was not easy to assess. Give it 4-5 years of cellaring, and drink it over the following 15-20.

Displays plenty of coffee and berry character. Medium- to full-bodied, with fine tannins and a medium finish. Needs a bit more midpalate.

Score: 85 - 88
